Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865
This is a lineage-based organization for women 18 years of age and older who are direct descendants of honorably discharged soldiers, sailors and Marines (including those who died or were killed during their term of service) who served on the Union side of the Civil War. Originally organized in 1885 in Ohio and endorsed by the Grand Army of the Republic in 1900, the organization was federally chartered on December 9, 1985.
The organizationís purpose is to preserve Civil War history through protection of Civil War battlefields and other related historic sites and monuments, locating Union veteran graves sites and obtaining suitable markers, and observing and participating in patriotic national and local holidays. DUVCW Headquarters is located in Springfield, Illinois, and houses an extensive library and Museum containing a vast collection of Civil War artifacts and memorabilia; admission to the public is free.
