France, Departmental Archives

The records of highest genealogical importance in France are civil registration and catholoic parish registers. Together these records are refered to as état civil. These records are held in the 97 department archives of France. Approximately 70% of the available civil registration and parish registers have been microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah (the Mormons) or by the departmental archives themselves.

The civil registration and parish registers (état civil) for the two departments of Vendeé and Mayenne are now available on-line for no charge through the following links:

Vendée - http://archives.vendee.fr/recherche/

Mayenne - http://217.109.169.249/cg53v2/etatcivil.php

The departmental archives of Loire-Atlantique (Nantes) has recently digitized their collection of civil and parish registers and plan to post them on the web in 2005 or 2006.
