Gamekeeping is a very old profession. The original gamekeepers date back to medieval times with the protection of deer from poachers in the royal hunting forests. Through the years, their duties expanded to that of making it possible for certain animals to thrive in the countryside. Gamekeepers may have been the precursors to the various environmental occupations of today. They are responsible for keeping the countryside in balance with plenty of wildlife. This in turn benefited many other wild birds and animals. The gamekeepers also watch over the woods, hedgerows, and grass lands, thereby providing nesting places and plenty of food.
