New England Historic Genealogical Society

The New England Historic Genealogical Society, also known as NEHGS or "His Gen", is the oldest and largest genealogical society in the United States. For over 150 years, NEHGS has helped beginning and experienced  alike trace their heritage in New England and around the world. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, NEHGS today has over 20,000 members worldwide. The Society also supports a very large Web site with more than 100 million names in its databases, the largest such online genealogy database of any genealogy society.

The Society also produces an excellent weekly e-newsletter. You can read the current and past editions online or subscribe to the newsletter's e-mail edition.

The R. Stanton Avery Special Collections feature over two million manuscript items ranging from the seventeenth century to the present covering New England and other regions. All of these items are available to NEHGS members at the Society's library at 101 Newbury Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02116-3007.

You an also search the Society's online card catalog of more than 200,000 genealogy books. Society members may borrow many of these books from NEHGS' Circulating Library. The Circulating Library's books are sent to members via regular mail. Circulating and non-circulating books alike are found in the online card catalog.
