Planter

In English and early U.S. usage, the owner or manager of a large cultivated tract of land or farm, located in a colony. Sometimes referred to as ancient planters, especially in the southern U.S., e.g. in the 17th century Virginia colony, connoting those who immigrated prior to 1611.
