Software for Windows

There is a large number of genealogy software programs for Windows available. Genbox is popular with beginner, intermediate and experienced genealogists alike for its array of features, standout reports and charts. Rootsmagic, from the same team as Family Origins, is viewed as one of the best in terms of breadth of functionality compared to cost. The Master Genealogist is comprehensive and often touted as a favorite with experienced genealogists. Family Tree Maker is said to be easy for the beginner. Legacy, also known as Legacy Family Tree, is purported to be good for intermediate users. Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is viewed as easy to use and is free, as are a few others. Brother's Keeper is judged to be good with reports.  Family Historian is one of the most popular programs in the UK, and has an interface that allows charts to be drawn directly, as well a powerful query engine. Most of these programs have active and well supported user groups.

Genealogists should choose their software according to their personal needs, since requirements vary among individuals. With the wide range of choices available you are certain to find one that fits your needs. Try drawing up a list of the things that are important to you. Set yourself a budget limit and then do a "Google" search for genealogy software. You may also want to visit a web site that evaluates and rates genealogy software for ideas. Compare the specifications and capabilities of those programs that seem to meet your needs and budget. Many software companies  offer a free 30-day trial, so you may be able to take a "test drive" with your top two or three choices. Perhaps you will find a free one that meets your needs!
